Bands vs Hiphop vs Dance: Discussing different music scenes

Grote zaal / 13.30 – 14.20

Are less and less young musicians playing music in bands? And if so, why? Should the pop music industry stimulate practising music in bands? In what way are young people making and performing music nowadays? Is there enough knowledge on genres such as dance music and hiphop, that are really popular amongst young people? Pop in Limburg, as many other music organisations, historically focusses more on band music and its scene. Should we invest in the dance scene and the hiphop scene or should we leave this to the professionals that are already engaged in these music scenes?

MODERATOR: Leon Verdonschot
PANEL:
Jules Weijers (Heads Up, Maastricht), Goof Veelen (ECI Cultuurfabriek, Roermond), Bert Habets (Thunder Agency)

Organising an educational music project with the DOOR! pop music grant

Kleine zaal / 13.30 – 14.20

Various speakers will give a presentation on the projects they organised with the DOOR! Pop music grant in 2017-2018. This grant, made possible by Pop in Limburg en Provincie Limburg, stimulates pop organisations to organise educational music projects with primary and/or secundary schools in their area. Besides these ‘good practices’ presentations, information will be given on how to write a proper application for this grant (the DO’s and DON’Ts).

MODERATOR: Hanneke Suilen (DOOR!)
PANEL:
Marjolein Peters (ECI Cultuurfabriek, Roermond), Dan van Houdt (Stichting Speelplaats Sittard), Jesse Deledda (Soundful Sunday), Joey Wojcik (Soundful Sunday)

How to reach your audience in 2018!

Grote zaal / 14.30 – 15.20

How can we reach an audience in the year 2018, and how do we stand out amongst others? How does a pop music venue or musical act reach its audience, and how will a music enthusiast find upcoming concerts he or she is looking for? Social Media is changing: Facebook is getting less relevant, while Instagram and Snapchat are only getting more relevant. How do you cope with these changes and does it affect one’s strategy? With a panel consisting of concertgoers, music lovers, musicians, but at the same time marketers, festival organisers and marketing specialists, we discuss how we can reach our audiences now and in the future.

MODERATOR: Leon Verdonschot
PANEL: Sjuul Stultjens (Marketeer Poppodium Grenswerk, Venlo), Tim Breur (Bureau Magneet), Art Philipeth (organisator Absolutely Free Festival; poppunt, BE), Jesse Deledda (ArtEZ)

What is the meaning of music (education) for young newcomers?

Grote zaal / 15.30 – 16.20

Last year, both Stichting de Muzikantine (Horst, NL) and Soundful Sunday (Stichting CULON) have teamed up with schools for non-native speakers and newcomers to set up an educational music project for the school’s students. Playing music together was an emotional and comforting experience for these children.

With a panel consisting of people who are closely involved with refugee work and/or music education we discuss wat the meaning of music (education) is for these children. Can music give comfort and structure in the life of children who have experienced an existential crisis or that have been exposed to war? And can the pop music industry contribute in a way, for example by stimulating projects and programs for these children? This topic has been relevant for many years and still is, especially in the light of current events: from the year 2018 – 2019 the subject music will be scrapped from the curriculum of a substantial number of ISK, where refugees and other children get their first education when they come to the Netherlands.

PANEL:
Luc Winants (Coördinator Vluchtelingenopvang Limburg, voorzitter bestuur SPL), Marion Steeghs (De Muzikantine, Horst), Rick Vechel (Rick Regelt), Yaman Kord
